At least seven years ago, back when I was studying at a university with a gorgeous, tree-lined campus, I had a moment of clarity.  It was a day of perfect weather and I was enjoying a walk through the oldest part of campus back to our campus ministry's building to do some studying.  The beauty of the trees and the rest of nature in the quad seemed just right and I found myself thinking that it was good.  It was good, just as God had stated in Genesis at the dawn of creation.

And God saw that it was good.

And I began to think about how "good" is most often used as an adjective in our language and culture--a mediocre adjective, actually.  In school it's better to have an "excellent" day or score a "superior" in choir.  The way we often use it, good just means decent.

Don't be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.
--John D. Rockefeller

But the world around me wasn't decent--it was good.  It is good.  Suddenly I was hearing good not as an adjective, but as a noun.  It had more weight, it had more meaning.  Good no longer felt mediocre--it felt like the best.  God is good and His world is good.  To be good must mean to be God's great perfection.

Maybe others can understand it better if we use the word goodness.  To say that there is goodness in the world.  I like to continue to think of good as a noun.  To think of it as a synonym for various things.  Love is good.  Family is good.  Peace is good.  Children are good.

"Believe in yourselves. Dream. Try. Do good."
"Don't you mean do well?"
"No, I mean do good."
--Boy Meets World

I think if you are able to wrap your mind around the idea of good as a noun and then swap it for other nouns as a synonym, it makes you think entirely differently about the original noun.  If we make our definition of good fit what God thinks of as good then we begin to think of those other things as God does.

“In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. "
--Anne Frank

Look outside on a beautiful day and recognize the world that God made and that it. is. good.  I have had the great privilege in my life of seeing many amazing parts of God's creation and it always does my soul well to stop and look and say, God, you did good.
